Tips and Hints

Tips and HintsWe know that moving and storing can be a hassle. We want to make your storage experience is as easy as possible. Review our helpful tips and hints as you consider ExtraSpace Storage for all your storage needs.

Extra Space is Clean Dry and Secure so just focus on what you are storing and how best to protect your valuables from needless damage caused by bad packing!

Its hard to workout exactly how much storage you will need before you start to pack and most clients think they will need more than they actually do, so try to remember that our units are up to 3.2mt in height so by thinking about what you are packing and how you are going to pack it you can save a lot of money. Stacking boxes on top of each other lets you get the maximum from your space. Knowing what you have in each box lets you stack with confidence.

Always use strong boxes, Extra Space sells boxes and all the other packing materials you will need but if you buy from another supplier always use a good quality box, it will stay in shape and you will be able to stack them without fear of collapse.

General Rules:
Put heavy items in the smaller boxes i.e books, kitchen cutlery, garage tools etc. even a small box full of books is heavy, a small box means you can move it about much easier.

Medium weight items such as clothes or bedding in medium sized boxes.
Remember that we also sell wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes that need to keep their shape. Big boxes for mixed items or bulky lightweight things

Remember our box return policy
You can buy a selection of boxes of all sizes safe in the knowledge that you can bring back any boxes you do not use (Ask at reception for details)

What’s going into each box?
Make an inventory while you pack, mark, number and label each box so you can find things at a later date. For example: Bedding, kids toys, summer clothes, fine china. It is well worth the effort when you need to find one item in a sea of boxes.

Think about where in the unit you are going to place your things
Try to fill all the boxes to capacity, a half full or bulging box may tip or collapse under the weigh of other stacked boxes if not correctly packed. Heavy boxes and furniture should be placed on the floor so when you stack things on top of each other nothing will get broken, for example.

On the bottom
Boxes of books, files, papers, kitchen equipment, heavy furniture.

In the middle
Boxes of clothes, beddings , CD’s, well packed plates, cups.

On Top
Pictures, light shades, fine china, glasses and anything that weighs very little like fishing rods or a boogie board.

Remember by labelling and marking you will save time when locating your things at a later date. Draw a small plan of your unit!! Showing the door you can then indicate if a set of boxes was placed on the right of the door the left or at the back of the unit!

Keep your inventory in a safe place at home. If you wish we can keep a copy for extra piece of mind.

Be sure to Plan your storage space:

  • Put those items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door.
  • To maximise space, stack similar sized boxes together.
  • Do not place heavy items on sofas or mattresses as they may deform the original shape.
  • Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings; we stock different sizes and types of cover to protect your furniture and appliances.
  • Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them.
  • Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation.
  • When storing garden and lawn equipment it should be cleaned before storing and drain any fluids prior to storage to avoid corrosive damage.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes, marked fragile and stacked on their end.
  • Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.
  • Larger appliances, such as stoves or refrigerators, provide additional space for storing towels, blankets, etc.
  • Break down items such as table legs, and store tabletops and sofas on end, to save space.
  • Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust.
  • Be careful not to store anything combustible (such as paint and chemicals) or perishable (such as food that is not permanently sealed i.e in a tin).
